It was a fairly wet Saturday night and early Sunday for much of the Avalon and Metro area. Rainfall of 4 to 8mm have been recorded, along with wind Gusts of near 90km/h and most importantly the Warm balmy temperatures! many areas neared the 10 degree mark! We had all 3 W's at that point, Warm, Wet & Windy. It came just in time for Christmas, for those who are NOT snow lovers.. Many of us, including me woke up this morning to 90% of the snow pack gone. it took a little less than 2 days to go from over 4" of snow to Green grass.. Personally I use to love the snow, but now that I getting older, I am becoming a bigger fan of the Hot summer weather and mild rainy winters. Don't get me wrong! I still love a good Blizzard from time to time :) So how warm was it? Here are some locations in the Metro from warmest to coldest. 1. Torbay........... 9.7*C 2. Quidi Vidi Lake.. 8.7*C 3. MUN University.. 8.5*C 4. YYT Airport......... 8.1*C 5. Downtown.......... 7.8*C 6. Mount Pearl........ 7.8*C 7. Goulds................ 7.4*C 8. Paradise.............. 7.3*C So it was Warm! this time of year, the average is 0*C! we were a good 5 to 10 degrees above from where we should be this time of year. It was also Wet! Here are some rain totals.. I could not find any rainfall for Torbay, so N/A (Not Announced) 1. Goulds............... 7.9mm 2. Downtown......... 7.1mm 3. Paradise............. 7.3mm 4. MUN university. 6.6mm 5. YYT Airport....... 6.6mm 6. Mount Pearl...... 4.3mm 7. Quidi Vidi Lake. 4.1mm 8. Torbay................ N/A It was also Very windy! winds most of area, Gusted between 60 and 90km/h. So how does Christmas Eve & Day look? Well we are entering a quiet weather pattern as a weak area of High pressure will dominate through much of the week, it will bring cold winds, and plenty of clouds with some sun. but there is a slight chance of snow flurries Christmas Eve Night when Santa arrives and into early Christmas Day, I don't expect there be any accumulation to make us have a white Christmas, but will give a little festive feel in the air with some flakes falling. The jet stream takes a dive, so we will be on the cold side of things, highs Christmas Eve & Day will only get to -2 to -4 for daytime highs. including Boxing day!. After Christmas and Boxing day, we remain quiet and cold, coldest day will be Thursday and Friday.. That is when the core of the cold air arrives, highs only in the -5 to -10 range for daytime highs and -10's for morning lows. my forecast for Friday is only -7! we should be at 0 or -1 for this time of year. By next weekend... We get a quick ridge in the jet stream, this will bring warmer air to and above 0, Saturday forecast high is -1 and on Sunday I am forecasting +4.. Saturday Night into Sunday is our next best chance for some Rain or snow. At this point it is to early to tell.. the temperatures at 5000ft at 850mb are going to be right around -2 to -6 degrees C, which supports snow.. but at near -2 you can have a mix bag of weather, that includes ice pellets, graupel, Freezing Rain and rain. the 540mb thickness level will be right over the avalon, the 540 line is what we call rain/snow line, anything above 540 is usually rain, especially over 550! and anything below 540, even 534, is snow.. So at this point I am calling it a chance of rain and/or snow. we will know more as that time comes closer!
After the weekend, into the start of 2019 for New Years Eve and Day.. a much bigger plunge of cold arctic air settles back down, this will bring us likely the coldest air of the season! with highs in the -10 to -15 range for daytime highs!! and -20's at night, wind chills likely in the -30's!! as there will be strong Gusty winds. If your in or going to Labrador by this time, may want to rethink! because they will see near 40-below zero temperatures, combined with 60+km/h winds.. Wind chills will be dangerously cold and at times extreme! Wind chills between -40 and -60 degrees C!! Hope you had a awesome Tibb's Eve! And have a Merry Christmas! ~CHMR Chief Meteorologist James Follett

As my vacation in Kamloops continue, I went to the amazingly beautiful Riverside park & water park.. around 10-11am, it was only around 15 to 17 degrees.. of course that did not stop the brave little ones from jumping in and getting wet!
Here at home it is a bit colder than that near 12 to 14 degrees with showers, here in Kamloops we also have some on and off showers and breaks of sunshine, as of 2:45pm right now it is a nice 19 degrees. Now compared to average here in Kamloops it's actually below normal.. average temps here in the interior desert is 24-26 degrees this time of year. But in St. John's 19 is above average as we should be near 16 degrees. Kamloops and St. John's will be blow average in temperatures for next few more days, at least until end of the work week! but slow and steady wins the race! right? A warm up is coming starting for the weekend, in st. john's temperatures will get back into the high 15's to low 20's and yes, that is with sunshine! and here on my vacation, temperatures starting on the weekend and continue for 7 days will be near record warmth with highs into the mid and high 30's, with a touch of humidity and plenty of sunshine. So far, I have been here a week and 2 days.. and I have yet to go swimming! because 10 the water levels are still very high, and 20 the water is still cold! I have yet to enjoy many hot days, hottest so far since I been here is 28 degrees. which of course to east coasters is hot.. but here in the desert 28 degrees with low 20% humidity, it feels nice, warm and comfortable, but not overall hot, like I like it! maybe the 35,36 & 37 degree heat for next week will be the top before I return back on air for Monday! Great to see the sunshine back is it! High pressure travelling to the North as we get into the evening hours and through tomorrow, today it sits south of Nova Scotia.. this will mean we get the North-West wind flow, and while we will get some sunshine!.. it will also stay rather chilly! highs only in the mid to high 5's, MAYBE a few spots touching 10 degrees. That High will move closer to the island tonight and tomorrow, and will lay south of the Avalon, this would mean a South-West wind direction! so plan on much warmer day tomorrow and sunshine! Showers return though from a weak trough over Labrador Friday night into Saturday, to spread showers in the metro by Saturday morning, these should clear out in time for the late afternoon hours, Sunday is Beautiful! Here in Kamloops, BC in the southern interior desert where I am on vacation, it's warm! and dry. was about 27.5 degrees yesterday and should get to near 30 today! I badly want to go swimming! but the rivers are still very high and the beaches are still flooded! also i felt the water yesterday, and it was cold!!! overall, despite the no beach going I am enjoying my vacation! I am hiking and walking and taking lots of pics and enjoying the gorgeous weather, be sure to stay tune to meteorologist Athena Masson forecast on air til 8pm!
I will return with my forecasts on air on the Monday, June 18th! I I will be posting a few updates on and off during vacation. Have a great day! ~CHMR Chief Meteorologist James Follett |
